What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
The carpal tunnel is a passageway through which the median nerve and flexor tendons of the fingers and thumb pass. Repetitive hand or wrist motions resulting from occupations like secretaries, computer operators, meat processors, cashiers and others can cause undue strain and pressure on the muscles and tendons in the hand, wrist and arms leading to irritation, inflammation, pain and swelling of the tendons in the carpal tunnel. This situation eventually causes damage to the median nerve in the carpal tunnel resulting in pain, burning, tingling, numbness and loss of movement and function of the hand and/or wrist. The problem is commonly referred to as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Preventing Carpal Tunnel Syndrom or providing relief for this problem once it developes is called Carpal Care.
