What is HbA1c?
HbA1c, also known as the Hgb A1c or Glycosylated Hemoglobin or GHB and Fast Hemoglobins, stands for Hemoglobin A1c. The HbA1c test is a simple blood test undertaken by diabetes insulin-dependent patients usually on a quarterly basis. The HbA1c test is not a substitute for daily urine and/or blood glucose determinations used to regulate insulin doses. Rather the test is used as a complement to these standard daily glucose-monitoring tests to assure proper diabetes management control over longer time periods.
Why test your HbA1c level?
The HbA1c test results can detect poor insulin control and can be used as an important diabetes treatment-monitoring tool. The HbA1c or glycosylated hemoglobin values are used most frequently to assess glucose control in those insuling-dependent diabetic persons whose glucose levels are very labile and in whom single blood glucose measurements may not accurately reflect the level of control over the preceding few weeks. Measurement of the HbA1c can provide a unique way of evaluating diabetes management control in those diabetes patients who have wide fluctuations in blood glucose levels that are used to regulate insulin dose. The HbA1c test diabetes control monitoring process can also provide important information to the diabetic person's health care professional to stave off potentially serious consequences resulting from poor maintenance and control of one's diabetes condition. Out of control diabetes conditions can result in elevated sugar levels in the blood, water and electrolyte loss, ketoacidosis, increased incidence of infections, blood vessel damage, coma, stroke and amputations.
Who should take an HbA1c test?
Measurement of the HbA1c can provide a unique way of evaluating diabetes management control in patients who experience wide fluctuations in blood glucose levels used to regulate insulin dosage. Anyone experiencing signs and symptoms like excessive thirst, frequent urination, increased appetite, weight loss or chronic fatigue should consider taking the HbA1c test.
What is the HbA1c testing procedure?
The specimen collection process is quick, easy and virtually painless. Using the special lancet (included in the Biosafe Blood Collection Kit), a couple of drops of blood are taken from a nick of a finger and deposited into a special collection card. The card is then sent to Biosafe Laboratories for analysis. Biosafe tests your blood sample to see how much HbA1c is present and then mails the results back to you in an easy-to-read, understandable report.
Since the Biosafe Prostate Screen produces a numerical result rather than a simple "yes" or "no" answer, both the testing approval and professional review of test results are required by a licensed physician. Biosafe has developed a nationwide network of medical doctors for this purpose.
After your test analysis is completed by Biosafe Laboratories, the results will be reviewed by a licensed physician before being sent back to you.
Why use the Biosafe HbA1c test kit?
Biosafe is one of the leaders in medical diagnostic test kits for at home or in office use. Each of Biosafe's test kits has been FDA approved and all tests are processed at the Biosafe CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments) approved laboratory to insure the accuracy of the results. Biosafe has designed each of its test kits so that they are easy enough to be self administered, thus allowing you to use the test kit in the privacy of your home or office. Simply take a test sample, mail the sample to the Biosafe laboratory (pre-paid return mailer included with kit), and within 72 hours of receiving your sample, Biosafe will contact you with your results.
Routine monitoring of your HbA1c level is just one of the very important steps that you must take to help keep your diabetes under control.
